Schopped: An Amateur Cooking Competition

You may recall, around Christmastime last year, we celebrated my sister-in-law's birthday (the day after Jesus' birthday) with a little cooking competition based on the show Chopped.

On the actual show, each chef gets the same 3 to 5 secret ingredients and then has 20 or 30 minutes (depending on the round) to make an appetizer, main course, or dessert using all the secret ingredients and anything else they want from a well-stocked pantry. The competition starts with four chefs competing, and with each round, one chef is eliminated until only two remain for the dessert course. Several judges critique the dishes along the way, by eating them once time runs up, and decide on an overall winner after the dessert round.

So, that's basically what we did! Except we only did one round, an appetizer round. And we gave the chefs some extra time... 45-ish minutes. And there were only two chefs competing: my husband and my sister-in-law. AND the two chefs had to share one workspace.

Oh, and we called it Schopped, which is a play on Chopped and our last name, 'cause we're funny like that.

So, here you have it! I will warn you, it's long. I think it's hilarious and the perfect length, but that's because all these peeps are my best friends. Though, perhaps you will find it funny too! And you'll get a chance to hear my real life voice and see my AWK mannerisms. Plus, you'll see/hear my husband too!

Overall, it was a BLAST and we can't wait to do it again! There are tentative plans for a re-match sometime next month, so we'll see what happens! I also think it's just a great idea for a dinner party. Have a bunch of friends over, buy some secret ingredients, and have two or three of your buddies cook up a storm in the kitchen while the rest of you hang around and cheer them on. Plus, you get to eat their yummies once the competition is over. Definitely sounds like a fun time!

A special thanks to my brother, Jeff, film editor extraordinaire, for putting all my poorly taped footage together and making this masterpiece! If you didn't notice, he put a plug in for his own movie at around the 10 minute mark as a "commercial break." What a goof! Thanks, Jeff!

PS - The video ends rather abruptly. We just got too lazy to come up with a good ending, so there you have it!

  1. I think the judges might be biased... but since they're equally biased toward both contestants, it works. :)

    1. Oh, they were DEFINITELY biased! But, you're right... equally biased. So it was fine. :) In the end, we decided it was a tie anyway, so it's not like it mattered. :P

    1. Ooo, double date night!! Great idea! Though, how would you set that up? One person from each couple competes while the other two judge? 'Cause then the judges might be biased. Tricky, tricky! I still love it, though!!

  4. So funny. I laughed out loud at the commercial break. I wish we could get together and do this in the same kitchen.

    1. Haha, I'll tell my brother you liked it!

It's times like these I wish teleportation was possible. Another Chopped competition amongst blogger friends would be a blast!
