How We Announced Our Adoption Plans to the Interwebs

Things were getting pretty serious with our adoption agency. We had just found out there were only 3 other families in their waiting pool and our profile was soon to be shown to a birthmom. So, we felt it was probably time to let the cat out of the bag and announce to the interworld that we we're "pregnant on paper."

I knew I wanted the announcement to be creative and cute because, well, all them pregnant ladies get to make cute announcements all the time, so why shouldn't we?

I turned to my creative best friend, Google, for inspiration and googled "adoption announcement." Lo and behold, there were a ton of pretty cute options. Wayyy more creative than what I would have come up with on my own. Thank you, Googs!

I spotted one that I absolutely loved and then got to work buying the supplies, finding a friend to take the pictures (thanks again, Rachel!), and convincing husband it was the right time to blast our news.

Here's what we posted:

We're nearly BURSTING with excitement to share this news with all of you...

I love that we got to play with our internet friends by making them think for a sec that the second balloon was going to say "expecting." But nope!! GOTCHA! We're adopting. Didn't see that coming now did ya, internet?

While I still hope that we get to make a fun pregnancy announcement someday, I really enjoyed announcing our adoption, mostly because it's pretty darn rare. For approximately every 1,000 pregnancy announcements, there's probably 1 adoption announcement, if that. (Btw, I made up those numbers.) So, it was kinda neat to be a part of something so different, so foreign to so many folks. I definitely felt special.

And the response was overwhelmingly loving and positive. So many likes, so many messages of congrats, even a few private messages from friends who are considering adoption or struggling with infertility and looking for support. Sometimes, the internet is a really awesome place. :)

As for current adoption news, we really don't have much going on right now.

I called our agency last week to tell them we took our newborn parenting class so they could mark it off on our file. The last official CHECK on our "getting ready for adoption" list!!

Then we chatted for a bit about how "ready" we are for baby. They know that we have tons of baby gear and are reading up on all things adoption related whenever we get the chance. I think I told the director of our agency "We're ready!" about 80 times over the course of a 5 minute phone call. Oops. Can you tell I'm a bit eager?

Instead of asking, "So, are you working with any birthmothers right now?" I chickened out and didn't mention it at all. I was too afraid of the answer. If she had said "no" it would have just broken my impatient heart in two right then and there. So, I really have no idea how soon things will happen.

Actually, even if I had asked and she had said "no", there's always a chance that a birthmom will contact the agency from the hospital after the baby's born, ready to make an adoption plan. Boy, would that be the fast track!

So, who knows what our story will be! We're just going to keep distracting ourselves with awesome summer plans and hope that we're so busy with fun that we hardly notice the time passing.

And then one day, probably on the day we least expect it, we'll get that call from our agency and finally get to call ourselves Mom & Dad. BOOM. Just like that! Childless one day, parents the next. Gosh, adoption is a wild ride, don't ya think?

  3. Congrats! We were talking about adoption announcements in a group on facebook recently. I photoshopped a group of OPK strips together with darkening lines and labeled them not with CD numbers but with all the steps of adoption. It just seems like we ought to be creative and excited about adoption. It's a BAY-BAY, you know?! Anyway, lots of prayers for birthmoms being said so that you can get good news soon. Congrats on being ready :)

    1. Thanks, girl! I love the OPK idea! How neat! And I completely agree... there are a bunch of things we miss out on by adopting, but creative announcements and overall excitement do not have to be included on that list. Thanks for the prayers and congrats! Wishing all the best for you and your husband too!

  4. Cute announcement! Yes adoption is a wild ride! To me it feels crazier and more exciting than medical treatment for the simple fact that we may not necessarily have time to prepare for baby like you would during pregnancy.

    1. So true! Even if you end up waiting a while with an agency, the moment you get the call is quite the whirlwind as nothing is real until that moment. Are you guys thinking of doing an announcement like this?

  5. Praise Jesus! This is so exciting! I actually teared up, so that's probably a completely normal response for a beautiful couple I've never met before. But, truly, so excited for y'all.

    1. Ha! Yes, I say that's a completely normal response. Honestly, it is. The blog world can be an awesome, supportive place, especially this Catholic corner of it. Thanks for your excitement and encouragement. :)

  6. You definitely have the creative gene...so cute. Sounds like things are moving along for you. It's been quiet for us on the adoption front...of course, we are among many other couples..not THREE! So exciting for you two!

    1. I think it's 1/2 creative and 1/2 "good at finding things on google and pinterest." Haha! And while it's pretty exciting that there are only 3 other families in waiting, they are also a very small agency that probably only does about 1 adoption a month, if that. So we could still be in it for a while. Continued prayers for you guys!

    1. Three other ideas I liked...

A picture that looks like an ultra sound but instead of a baby it shows the words "We're Adopting" inside the outline of the country you're adopting from.

The two of you hold up a sign that says "We're Adopting" with "Due Date: TBD" beneath it.

Buy a large globe. Get a pic of you hold it over your belly. Hold your hands in the shape of a heart over the country you're adopting from. Put "We're Adopting" in big pretty letters on the pic.

I think even though the first and last are more for international adoption, there's nothing wrong with representing domestic adoption by using the U.S. in your announcements.

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

    1. Making the announcement like that really helped us feel even more excited about adoption. We were able to normalized it by making the announcement similar to what pregnant women do. Waiting sure it tough. My heart aches for all of us in waiting, whether that be waiting for adoption, pregnancy, a spouse, and so on. Hugs!

  9. You guys are too cute!!! Wow, how creative! Pretty brave too, I think, since with adoption you have no clue when the baby is coming. That's beautiful to think that you encouraged other people thinking about adoption. You're in our prayers every day!!

    1. Thanks, Ecce! I sure hope we encouraged other folks to think about adoption too. Even though our wait might be long still, I'm glad that most people know about our adoption plans. We'll definitely need their support and encouragement during the wait.

  12. This is so awesome!! I loved what you said about feeling special and unique that you get to make this announcement...I have been reflecting a lot on the great adventure and rarity of adoption recently and have realized how lucky those people are who get to experience such a wonderful and unique adventure! :) Lots of prayers for this season of waiting!

    1. Yes! Amen to everything you've said here. In many ways it can feel like we're missing out by going the adoption route, but when you think about it, we sure are lucky for getting to do something so wonderful and unique. It's going to be a wild ride and we're so excited! Thank you for the prayers and positive support!
