Little Happies -- We Had an Anniversary! But More Importantly, Who Sells the Best French Fries??

Hi, friends!  And welcome back to Little Happies... the happiest little link-up on the planet, in which we share all the tiny joyful things going on in our lives currently! Now, what could be happier than that?

--one--

John and I celebrated our 3rd anniversary this past week. Weee woooo! Go us!

Instead of our usual celebration vacation, we had to stay put this time around. Both of us were working. (Laaaame.)

To put myself in a more festive mood, I got my nails done all pretty for our date that evening. Since I rarely get my nails done, this was a maj treat and I absolutely enjoyed the stink out of it. Totally digging the glitter accent nail right now.

After we both wrapped up at work, we went out for the fanciest meal of my life at Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen. Two words I would use to describe the meal are mmmmmm and MMMMMMM!

Happy anniversary, sweet doodle love!

Do you see the heart?

Sometimes you just want french fries.

And then other times, like last night, you don't just want any french fries. You want the best french fries in town. For me, those can be found at Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

(Life hack: Tear the bag open like you see above to create a big ol' placemat for your greasy treat.)

Who do you think sells the best french fries around? Don't be shy! My taste buds appreciate your suggestions!

John's been jonesin' for some of these sweet copper mugs for a while, so we went ahead and bought some earlier this week. Custom says you're supposed to drink Moscow Mules out of 'em, which we've been hooked on since the Russian Winter Olympics. Obvi.

The mugs are especially neat because they get suuuuuper cold and all condensationy on the outside while your drink stays icy cold on the inside. It totally changes your drinking experience. For the better.

Even if you don't have these cool mugs, you should still make yourself a Moscow Mule, recipe above. Muddle some blueberries with it for an even tastier adult beverage.

We made pickles!!

But not your traditional pickles. Nope, not a single cucumber in there. Instead, we pickled carrots, red peppers, and cauliflower. The recipe is super easy and the result, super tasty. And the longer they sit, the better they taste! John likes the carrots the best. I totally think the cauliflower wins it.

Basically, it's my favorite go-to snack right now. Puts a smile on my face every time I open the 'fridge. The mason jar makes me happy too.

I was heading back from the farmer's market by myself and was afraid Mr. Watermelon was going to make a run for it. So, I strapped him in. And then I giggled at myself for a solid 5 minutes.

Ahh, it really is the little things, folks!

Hi, my name is Stephanie and I'm addicted to calligraphy.

Helllloooooo, Stephanie!

Welcome to my new hobby! It's the best trick I have right now for keeping my mind off of adoption and boy does it work. I started an online calligraphy course about two weeks ago, so that's where all these mad skillz are coming from. I'm still in the beginner phase, most definitely, but it's getting better each day. And honestly, it's super peaceful. I kinda feel like I'm back in 3rd grade learning cursive, but that's probably the best part. Oh, to be young again. :P

Have a great week, lovelies! Can't wait to see your Little Happies!

  2. Great happies!! I am really digging your caligraphy, bigtime! I asked Jonathan if he would allow me to have you mock up a "True Good and Beautiful" in that font because it's sweet!

Happy Anniversary to you two! I looked at that menu for the Italian place and it must have been DELICIOUS. I hope you savored every bite :)

Lastly - I love that you buckled the watermelon in. Hey, they do roll so you were using your noggin on that one. I think it's Life Hack worthy, just like that fry bag trick at Five Guys. Speaking of....have you watched this video yet? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGkHRa64sDY

    Hilarious!

    1. "You bite the fry, the fry bites back! That's how you know it's a good french fry." HAHAHAHA!! I've definitely seen that video before, but not in foreverrrr, so I'm thankful you brought it back out of the archives for me. SO GOOD.

I'm not sure if you're like this, but I'm totally a food creeper. If a friend tells me they've been somewhere good, I want to know where they went, what they ate, and what everyone is saying about it on yelp. Food creeper or just plain foodie? You be the judge. :)

JOHHNNNN, book me a ticket to CO. We need to go eat their french fries. And maybe visit Amanda, but more importantly, the french fries.

      :P

  4. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!!! Love the nails! And where were you when I was addressing wedding invites like a ten-year old boy?!?! I would've hired you in a hot minute!!!

Also, I have been wanting to make my own pickles for...years. No, really. Every time I tell my family or T that I want to do this, they just laugh. You're an inspiration! I must get back on the pickle train and make this dream come true already!!

    1. Gee, thank you! Glad you like the nails. And glad you like my handwriting!! I think it still looks kinda "eh," but that may be because I'm my own toughest critic.

PLEASE steal that pickle recipe. It's so dang good!! The best part is that they don't require any canning if you plan on eating them within a few weeks of making them. The canning part always scares me away from pickling, so this recipe was definitely a home run for us!

    1. Thanks, MB! Glad you like the nail polish and calligraphy. :) I bet your letters would look pretty too! You should give it a try. Especially if you're looking for something to take your mind of off waiting for adoption. :D Actually, any old hobby will do!

    1. Are you a calligrapher??? I'd love to see some of your stuff! I bet yours looks amazingerrr! I'm obsessed to the point that I regularly check the "modern calligraphy" hashtag on instagram AND follow several calligraphers on there. Have you gone that far off the deep end yet?

  8. Given my current obsession with pickling things (just learned how a few weeks ago), my 22 year obsession with all-things-calligraphy, and the embarrassing number of watermelons I have seatbelted into my passenger seat over the past month - I just wanted to offer my *SWIFT* and *LOUD* and *ENTHUSIASTIC* approval of all of these little happies. I need to join in on this trend ;)

    1. Hahaha, this is great! We have a real connection over all this happies and it makes me even happier! I probably should have mentioned, we totally cheated on those pickles and picked a recipe that didn't require any canning. They just sit in your fridge for up to two weeks. The lazy-man's pickle. I love it. So, are you a calligrapher?? If so, you need to share some of your pretty work!! Gah! Calligraphy is so pretty, especially when the professionals do it! And YESSS! So happy someone else has fun buckling in their watermelons. Hahaha. Do you laugh at the ridiculousness of it when you do it?

    2. PS - I'd love to see your Little Happies sometime! We do them every Monday. Please do join in!

    3. Yes, I laugh at myself for all of my conscientious safety concerns for my watermelons. Also - how did I forget to fawn over my love of the Moscow Mule?!?! I discovered Crabbie's about a year ago and have been hooked on it. I'll have to post some calligraphy for you soon! I learned how to do it in Chemistry class when I was 12 (only way the teacher could get through to me!!) and I've been doing it ever since. I've been doing it professionally for about 10 years, but it's really just as projects come to me. So. Much. Fun. I'll definitely put together a list of happies some Monday soon!! :)

    4. Also, this girl right here doesn't can *yet*. Totally pickling things in my fridge and on my counter. Lacto-fermentation all the way, baby!! :)

    5. Isn't it nice to be able to laugh at ourselves? :) Glad you're on the Moscow Mule train too! And calligraphy! Please share soon!! I can't believe you do it professionally!! I also can't believe that this is the 2nd random thing we have in common: cantoring weddings and now calligraphy!! What else do we have in common that we don't know about? Crazy stuff!

  9. Happy Anniversary! I love in-n-out fries but they are only on the west coast, sorry. They are super tasty so of you ever do come out here you gotta try them :)

    1. Thanks, Kat! And happy birthday to you!! (Your bday and our anniversary are both July 16, right? I think I remember that from last year! And Our Lady of Mount Carmel's feast day. Woop woop! Good stuff!)

I reeeeallly need to get my hands on some in-n-out fries. Stat! Sounds delicious. And I hear they can wrap their burger in lettuce for a lovely GF treat. Mmmmm. 'Scuse me while I book my ticket to Cali, pronto! :)

  10. Since you already need to come to CO, I'm going to put the vote in for Larkburger parmesan truffle fries. Just had some tonight and they are fantastic. Definitely beat all y'all's other fries. :) ALSO very GF friendly! And it's real food, even though it is kind of set up as a fast food restaurant. I just had some tonight, in fact.

    1. Mmmmm, I see a fry tour of CO in my future! Parmesan truffle fries would put ANY normal fries to shame! It's kind of cheating a little to add extra yummies like that, but who cares if it tastes soooo goood?!!!!! If I can't make it out to CO soon, can you mail me some? K, thx! :)
