Little Happies -- Carving Pumpkins

Hey, friends! Welcome back to the Little Happies link-up, in which we all share our small happy moments and things from the week past.

This week, I've got one Little Happy brought to you by a fun night with friends.

--one--

One night last week, John and I were just sitting around with no plans in sight. So on a whim we texted some friends who are kinda stuck in their house these days (they just had a baby) and asked if they'd be up for some pumpkin carving and cider sippin' later that evening. I offered to bring all the supplies and they excitedly said YES PLEASE!

3 pumpkins, 2 carving kits, 6 bottles of hard cider, 2 jugs of virgin cider, 1 apple pie, and 1 big carton of vanilla ice cream. . . sounds like fall, doesn't it?

We made our way over to our friends' place with all our supplies and just had a fantastic evening celebrating the turn of the season. They even lit their outdoor chimney for us!

Also, I was shocked to find out that the wife of the couple had never carved a pumpkin before!! What?! Crazy!! By the end of the night, she loved communal pumpkin carving so much that she asked if we could make a tradition of it every year. :)

We all agreed that our favorite moment of the night was lighting these bad boys after all our hard work.

And then we posed with our pumpkin. We've learned over the years that carving a pumpkin, especially one that size, is best done as a team. When my arms would get tired, John would take over, and vice versa. Plus, I was able to convince him to do all the gut scooping while I did all the seed sorting. I think I got the easier job. :)

Hope you're all having a lovely fall, friends. Have you carved any pumpkins yet?

    1. Thanks! I can hardly take credit, though. We just traced a pattern. :)

  2. You guys have some skill - I can't go beyond the triangle eyes sort of pumpkins! Super cute!

    1. I have to admit, we don't reeeeally have skills. Unless you count tracing a pattern and then cutting it out a skill. :) We bought one of those pumpkin carving booklets at Target for $5. Highly recommend!

  3. I did seed sorting with my kiddos when I was a teacher...the kids loved going through all of the "goo" to get the seeds. I haven't carved a pumpkin since I was a kid. Sounds like a fun evening.

    1. Ooo, that sounds like a great kiddie activity! You should carve a pumpkin this year! It's extra fun with a yummy mug of cider on the side. :)

  4. Sounds like fun! I haven't done that in a long time. I get really annoyed by the pumpkin innards. It would be a lot more fun doing it in a group, though.

    1. It is! I've only ever carved a pumpkin at a pumpkin carving party. Maybe that's why I still like it so much. Those innards are no fun when sorted alone. Yuck! If you throw a pumpkin party, let me know! I'll be there. :)

  5. I'm so jealous of all the fall fun you're having! Its my favorite season, but summer has decided to stick around for a while here. I love the pumpkins! I want to carve one now too!

    1. It's been hot around here too! In the 70s and 80s most days. Boo! And even worse, hot temps are no bueno for carved pumpkins, so our owl pumpkin barely lasted a week. Ick. All the mold that grew... so nasty. Sigh. I guess we should wait for cooler weather next time we carve. :) I'm hoping your weather is starting to cool off!

    1. Thanks, MB! I hope you've gotten a chance to carve a pumpkin too. I remember how excited you were to do it last year. :)

  7. Your pumpkin turned out great! We can't even seem to master pumpkin painting over here. And, what a great friend you are. When we had a newborn, we loved it when people came to us, esp if they brought food with them. LOL!

    1. I figured they'd like it if we brought them food. :) Ha! They couldn't resist. And here's my trick for carving great pumpkins: go to Target or Walgreens or Walmart and buy one of the pumpkin carving kits (booklet + small knives). They've got great patterns inside that are easy peasy to follow. That's how we do it every year!
